Mallorca always surprises. Those who think the island is all about beaches and party miles have not yet experienced the Tren de Sóller. The historic narrow-gauge railway, affectionately called "the red lightning," connects Palma with the picturesque mountain town of Sóller – and the ride through the Tramuntana is already an experience in itself.
For over 100 years, the elegant wooden carriages have been operating on this route – over viaducts, through olive groves, and between impressive mountain panoramas.
The History of the Tren de Sóller
The narrow-gauge railway was opened in 1912 – financed by the orange growers of the Sóller valley. It overcomes an elevation difference of several hundred meters on the way to Sóller – an engineering feat that was considered a sensation at the time.
The Route – What You Will See
The journey takes about an hour. The centerpiece is the Col de Sóller: The train winds through tight curves in the Tramuntana mountains, crosses impressive stone viaducts, and offers breathtaking views. Then the descent into the fertile Sóller valley with its orange plantations.

In Sóller, a stroll through the charming old town with Modernisme architecture is worthwhile. The local oranges and the liqueur made from them are a perfect souvenir.
Harbor of Sóller – Dinner by the Water
A historic tram runs from the city center to the harbor in 20 minutes. There, fresh fish and a glass of white wine await at sunset. In high season, reserve tickets in advance – the trains are often fully booked.
